It's a small world after all...

Douglas Jacob was born June 10, 2007 and weighed in at 7 lbs 13 oz, 20.5 inches long. So (good heavens) he's a month old today. He's an easy baby, with lots of snoozing and smiles--and don't tell me that's just gas, you party pooper. Tired parents need something to keep them going.

The birth went smoothly; I started having labor pains about 9 or 10 pm on Saturday night, the doula came by about 8 am Sunday morning, we got to the hospital about 1 pm on Saturday afternoon and he was born at 1:33. Yes, it was a quick labor. Yes, it runs in the family. No, I didn't remember that while I was in labor, or I would have warned folks about that. No, I didn't have any painkillers, there wasn't time. Just like everything else, I showed up a little late and didn't get around to it. I'd be happy to give you the birth story in obsessive detail, but after a couple weeks talking about it in person those seem to be the points that folks care about.

Answers to the current favorite questions from family/friends: he sleeps about three hours at a crack, usually. I'm breastfeeding. It's going well, now that we've made it through that first week. I'm going back to work in late August or early September. Yes, we're tired. Yes, he's adorable. Yes, I really do believe that he can smile and understand my words, despite what you all tell me. His dad and I are both in love. He brings out a surprising tendency towards funny little songs in his father.

Despite all my research, and lecturing on the topic for years, I'm finding baby care even more intense than I would have expected. Some parts are really really glorious! Some parts are just tiring. So I'm going on hiatus; there's been no knitting, no blogging, no reading of blogs since I started this. It's fair to say that I probably won't get back to that for a good six months or so (though I am carving out a little time for email, or I think perhaps I would start to get the shakes). I might post sporadic non-knitting stuff over at Caveat Lector, which is the livejournal blog. C'mon over, if you'd like to keep up with me there. Otherwise, I'll meet you back over by the circular needles sometime early next year.
